The Guess Worker

The story of consciousness - part two

Overview:

  • In this second instalment I look at how and why different intensities of pain evolved

  • Different intensities of pain allowed early conscious animals to gauge the urgency of threats

  • Different intensities of pain also meant that animals could make conscious decisions

  • In early conscious animals the steepness of rises of neuro- transmitter came to signal the intensity of pain
  • This signalling mechanism allowed the feeling of pleasure to develop
